Support for W.E.A.

The University of Canterbury Council is to provide $7600 assistance to the Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association as an interim measure until funds are made available by the Department of Education. Although the Department of Education has now accepted responsibility for paying tutorial fees for staff employed by the Workers’ Educational Association of New Zealand, no funds have yet been granted. The vice-chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips) told a meeting of the University Council yesterday, that it was important to grant the financial assistance' as a “tiding over measure,” until the Department of Education had made its grant. A meeting of the New Zealand Workers’ Educational Association will discuss the matter of Government grants in Christchurch next week-end.
