Shed light on air pollution-trust
The Christchurch Civic Trust Board wants the City Council to make its technical information on air pollution available to the public through the news media, particularly information on the principal causes of air pollution in the city.
Air pollution in Christchurch and the council’s proposals for clean air zones were discussed by the board at a meeting last evening, and a motion to "encourage” the council to make technical information on air pollution, particularly on the principal contributors, available to the news media, was passed. Some members felt that cars and trucks were as much to blame as the open fire. The
council had by-laws to help control the exhausts of heavy vehicles, but these were not properly enforced. The chairman of the board (Mr D. J. Hewitt) said that from the point of view of public health the topic of air pollution was of the utmost importance. Concern over the litter problem in Cathedral Square was also expressed at the meeting. The board approved a letter to the Christchurch City Council expressing its “qualified approval” of the alterations to the Square, but pointing out that the litter by-laws should be more rigorously enforced.
More rubbish bins, which could be made to blend in with the surroundings, were needed in the Square, members said.
They also suggested that suitable signs reminding customers that littering was an offence be displayed in eating houses, and that litter wardens be appointed.
