Cost of Games

Sir, —J. Patterson seems toj be under the impression that! the overwhelming financial: commitment of Queen Elizabeth II Park is due to the New Zealand Games and an art union, and subscriptions from various sources would solve the problem. The Commonwealth Games were, of course, a great success and more than paid for themselves, thanks to an excellent organising committee. The New Zealand Games showed a loss but that would eventually be met by various means, but what of the yearly cost of the upkeep of the park which is really what all the controversv is about? The cry from the former Mayor, now on the Local ■ Body Commission was “the i ratepayers will have to lump lit” when the colossal cost of a new swimming pool was queried.—Yours, etc., WOT! NO THEATRE? j February 20, 1975.
