Farming industry
Sir, —In your paper today, I could not help but note the affinity between James Reston’s article on how beautiful America appeared from high up in a jet, and the contrasting story which confronted him when landing again, and Mr Tizard’s address to the Panmure Rotary Club. I quote, “I must try to get people to accept that things are not so much worse than normal, only worse than the last two years.” Will the Government members come down out of the jets, and face facts. The farmer knows he just cannot make ends meet, some are living on less than is handed to the pensioner for doing nothing. His investment is commanding nil, and this pittance is often for a seven-day working week, and long daily hours. Why should a peasant on this low income produce cheap meat and bread for those whose incomes are 10 times as high?—Yours, etc., FARMERS OF THE WORLD UNITE. February 18, 1975.
