Schriek justifies title selection

Missing from the Canterbury championship 15,000 m field because of work commitments, Jacob Schriek justified his place in the field for the national cycling championships with a powerful victory at Denton Park last evening.

Schriek won the feature 8000 m race from a fast-finishing Blair Stockwell and Lindsay Sword, with the favoured Gary Sword and Michael Litolff running out of room.

■ Until that race it had been ILitolff’s evening. It did seem from the way he was finishing that the Canterbury championships might have come along a few days too early for the seasoned sprinter.

In the “Aces” 400 m. Litolff cruised past with a powerful burst in the straight, and he repeated the effort in the A grade 200 m, making his run from four-back at the 2&om mark.

There was another very fast 800 m from Schriek, too. He led Gary Sword across the line in

55.95ec, a time which suggests I very strongly that Schriek will be very hard to beat in the national kilometre time trial championship. And there were wins, for the first time this season, for the oldest and youngest competing on the track. Don Johnson, also president of the Canterbury centre, capped a consistent night with victory in the B grade 2000 m. And Michael Andrew scored a popular win in the B grade I novices’ 1200 m race. !
