Riccarton racing away with table tennis

Clear-cut victories were the order of the evening in the eleventh round of the A grade table tennis competition. University and Avonside I won 8-4, Avonside II was successful 10-2. and Riccarton I did not concede a match. With only three rounds remaining, Riccarton I has moved four points ahead and, with the defeat of its nearest challenger. Selwyn, the summer title seems certain to be retained by the holder. Selwyn’s loss to Avonside I was not unexpected. Bill Scott had a prior engagement and. although his replacement Neville BrightweU played creditably in his first match since October, the team could offer only spirited opposition. John Baxter credited Selwyn with two singles wins, although on both occasions he had only the bare two points to spare in the deciding sets. BrightweU dismissed Les Stewart in straight sets, but he was even more impressive against the highly-regarded Maurice Burrowes. Tn the third set of their free-flowing contest, Brightwell led 8-4, but trailed 9-10 at ends. The recent match practice of Burrowes proved decisive, however, in the final rallies. Dallington n threatened to extend University in the early stages of their fixture after Denis Kalin had made some remarkable returns to beat the ninthranked Canterbury plaver, Yee Chow Boi, in three sets. Kalin led 19-15 in the vital game, Yee won the next five points, but Kailn’s defence and return of service took him to victory. George Hart chimed in with a win over Barbara Taylor, and Graham Rhind did likewise. But Ling Nan Ming kept the students ahead and the result was settled when Miss Taylor surprisingly defeated the in-form Kalin. Graham Main and Brian Wilson both won three singles in Avonside IT's easv win against Riccarton 11, and the closest Dallington I came to taking a set from the leader. Riccarton I, was when Grant Adamson ex-

tended John Armstrong to 21-19 in the third set A little more patience and care by Adamson might have given him one of his most important A grade wins. Points: Riccarton I 18.
