Gear lost by tourist
A Canadian on a working holiday in New Zealand lost part of his equipment when travelling to Arthur’s Pass on Sunday. Mr G. Wallace was on his motor-cycle about midday when his $lOO sleeping-bag, in a green kitbag, and a burgundy pack, slipped off the machine.
He thinks the goods fell off on a rough portion of road after he crossed Porters Pass. “I’m a bit stranded now. I’m sure it’s been picked up.” said Mr Wallace, who is advertising in the hope that the property’ will be returned. He has been back over parts of the route four times.
Mr Wallace, aged 26, leased out his 60-acre farm on Vancouver Island to take a working holiday in New Zealand. He has been working on farms and as a carpenter. At home, he specialises in organic fruit and vegetable growing and pig and beef-cattle raising. “I really like the place and the people here, and I may relocate,” said Mr Wallace, who is staying with friends, Mr and Mrs F. Burridge, at Oxford, until tomorrow.
Motor racing.—Roger Ward, formerly one of America's top motor racing drivers, has decided to make a come-back—at the age of 54. Agence France Presse re ported Ward, who retired from competition in 1966 hopes to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 this 'ear.
Swimming.—Two teenage Australians. Jenny Turrall and Sonva Gray, each broke Australian re-
cords during the New South Wales championships in Sydney. Miss Turrall aged 14. won the i OO metres freestvle in 4min 19.1 »ec. 2.6 sec Inside the old record, -nd Miss Gray, aged 15. took the COO metres freestyle tn 2min 4.5 sec, six-tenths of a second better than heri own record.
