Comparisons with police
Police working conditions could not be compared with those in other occupations, the president of the New Zealand Police Association (Detective Senior-Sergeant R. L. Butler) said in Christchurch vesterdav.
Mr Butler said comparisons had recently been made with police pay/ and some people had even tried to equate their own employment with that of the police. “Until now we have refrained from commenting to avoid any suggestion of interference or involvement in the issue or issues. “But we feel the point has been reached where it is appropriate to say that the fixing of wages and allowances for members of the police is by way of specific criteria set out in the Police Act. “Historically it has not been possible to compare police conditions of employment with any other field of employment in the community. In all such negotiations this fact has always been accepted. Detective Senior-Sergeant Butler and the executive director of the association
(Mr H. S. Thomas) flew to Christchurch yesterday to discuss comparisons of pay and work made recently by firemen and ambulancemen.
