Plunket Society
Sir, — I share the concern of the president of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs G. Stewart, expressed in “The Press” of December 6. Plunket Society supporters up and down the country are gravely concerned by the remarks of the Minister of Health. While asserting that he has no intention of taking over the Plunket Society, Mr McGuigan, in a prerelease statement on the White Paper on Health, refers to the voluntary health services as “a relic of the past and an outmoded concept” and talks of “changing the structure” — ominous words for the thousands of voluntary workers and supporters of the Plunket Society. If, as Mr McGuigan states, he does not intend to interfere with the structure and function of the Plunket Society, who is he referring to when he talks
of voluntary organisations subsidised by the Government, engaged in infant welfare? — Yours, etc., (MRS) M. GRAHAM, New Zealand Councillor, piunket Society. December 6, 1974.
