Coral reefs regenerate
t.V.Z. Press Assn— Copyright) SUVA. A starfish plague which had threatened the destruction of coral reefs in Fiji and other parts of the South Pacific has abated, according to a marine biologist, Dr Barry Goldman, of the University of the South Pacific, in Suva.
He said that four years ago the crown of thorns starfish. which fed on the soft tissue of living coral, had infested wide areas of reefs in such overwhelming numbers that destruction of the reefs seemed a real possibility. Latest reports from divers showed that the plague had now receded to insignificance. The damaged reefs were regenerating and apparently had not suffered permanent damage, Dr Goldman said.
