The New Zealand opera .singer, Kiri Te Kanawa, has said that her appearance in Westminster Abbey at the memorial service for Mr Norman Kirk was a private gesture for a great man. “I insisted that I was making an essentially private gesture and I wanted it confined to within the abbey,” she said. Mias Te Kanawa said she was sorry if New Zealanders had misunderstood the reason she refused permission for her singing to be broad-' cast.
