Warning to Greece

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BRUSSELS. The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has warned Greece that she cannot be guaranteed automatic protection by her partners in the event of attack if she leaves N.A.T.O.’s integrated defence structure. Alliance military sources in Brussels say that this has been made clear to the Athens Government several times. N.A.T.O. and Greece officials are prepared for negotiations on the Greek intention to withdraw from the integrated system. The talks are expected to begin soon, but could last for several months — as in the case of France, which withdrew from N.A.T.O.’s defence structure in 1967. The negotiations will, however, have a different dimension from those with France because Greece has a common frontier with the Warsaw Pact group, and does not have a defence capacity of her own, like the French independent nuclear deterrent, the sources say.
