Referee to retire
(N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA. i Jealousies and prejudices i in refereeing circles are one reason for the retirment of a top Bay of Plenty Rugby referee, Mr Bob Oswald. Mr Oswald, who began his referring career in 1957, has controlled 23 first-class games, including three Ranfurly Shield matches and four internationals. He will referee his last game on Sunday. Mr Oswald believes that referees should have more support from unions, judicial committees and club officials. “When coaches see players from their teams engaging in foul play which is not apparent to the referee, those coaches should certainly reprimand the players concerned. “I see more rough play today — especially in the lower grades,” said Mr Oswald, “and although there may be some less experienced referees whose control of the game is not so firm, thase referees must have the chance to gain experience. I don’t think, however, that this is a real factor in the increasing rough Play.”
