South Canterbury run to Horan

K. Haran (Ariki) won the 101 mile senior road race from Pleasant Point to Temuka on Saturday.

The route of the race, usually to Timaru, was changed this year because of Ranfurly Shield match traffic congestion. D. O’Sullivan (St Paul’s, Inver-[ cargill) took fastest time (51min[ lOsec). W. Terris (New Brighton) took fastest veteran time (57min 18seci. The first veteran home was L. Masted (Toe H.). Junior cross country M. Stevens (Caversham I won the S.I. junior cross-country at Timaru on the same day. His time was 31min 45sec. A. McLaren (New Brighton) ran an exceptionally good race only 12sec back, for second. His club mate, D. Greig, was third. K. Amery (Ariki) burst away

to the finish to win the senior colts’ race in 18min 30sec. J. O’Brien (New Brighton) looked sure of a win until he fell at the last fence. He ran on well for second though, from A. Engstrom (Timaru). M. Marychurch (Ariki) came in 100 yards ahead of P. Brownlie iSt Paul’s, Invercargill) to win the junior colts race. C. Gums (Toe H) was third. Women's races J Gilling (New Brighton) with a time of 21mln 50sec, won the senior women’s race. A. Duncraft (New Brighton), 22min 05sec, was second, and C. Giles (Timaru) third. Two Timaru girls, D. Giles and D. Broadhead, ran a good first and second in the under 15 event and. M. Hadley (New Brighton) was third.
