Shortages in U.S.
i.S’Z.P 4 Reuter —CoptjrtpM) WASHINGTON, August 29 Virtually every giant industry in the United States is suffering from severe shortages of key goods, a Congressional study disclosed today. The Senate Permanent Investigations Sub-committee, the staff of which surveyed 258 of the largest American corporations, found only 13 companies able to report no shortages of basic materials, and even they indicated that the high prices they had to pay for commodities were causing them serious problems. Senator Henry Jackson the Democratic chairman ol the sub-committee, and Senator Walter Huddleston, who is also a Democrat and was in (charge of the survey, said the results showed that any plan to combat inflation must take into consideration the shortage of materials and the need to increase supplies. Shortages of at least 63 different materials were reported, the worst concerning steel, petro-chemicals, aluminium, copper, papei, and plastics.
