'l000 per cent mark-up’

An inquiry in Melbourne has been told that some chain-stores in Australia are marking up imported clothing bv up to 1000 per cent. The executive director of the Australian Confederation of Apparel Manufacturers, Mr R. Aitchison, told the Industry Assistance Commission that retailers had been “bleeding the public white.” i “Imported clothing should be marked with its country iof origin, and the wholesale price of such garments should be registered with the Price Justification Tribunal,” he said. A children’s wear manufacturer, Mr G. L. Morgan, told the inquiry that he knew of no retailer who made less than 200 per cent on imported apparel, and he added: “One department istore in Sydney which once Isold jumpers for $1.50 now i charges $l4 for the same things.”
