Wool ‘lost’ by rail

Bales of wool consigned by rail had been lost for up to five months, the provincial executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers was told yesterday. Hold-ups in rail transport were a problem for farmers as well as other sectors of the business community, raid the president (Mr P. G. Morrison). Wool consigned by rail in December had not arrived at its destination until February, but wool sent by road in January had arrived in time for the February wool sale, said a farmer. Another delegate said wool sent by rail had been lost for five months. The executive decided to support a move to have the 40-mile restriction on road transport of wool lifted. The matter was referred to the transport committee. The 40-mile limit was being vigorously attacked by all sectors of the business community,- said Mr A. L. Mulholland.
