Church union

Sir,—Writing as one who was a strong supporter of the Anglican - Methodist scheme for Church union when it came before the Con-

vocations of the Church of England, and now visiting New Zealand, I could not but feel profound regret at tone of Mr Limbrick’s letter in Friday’s issue of “The Press.” It must be accepted that for some people the change from the word "priest” to “presbyter” represents something more than mere lexiography and to label a bishop who takes this view as “ignorant,” as the letter implies, is bringing a regrettable atmosphere into the debate on church union. Having lived through the traumatic experience of voting on a church union scheme and, in many ways the more traumatic aftermath of a negative vote, I can only hope and pray that real Christian courtesy and understanding will temper your debates and lead to the union of Christ’s Church.—Yours, etc.,

JOHN C. HOUGHTON. Hon. Canon of Ripon, Yorkshire, England.
