Strikes a record

AUCKLAND, April 28. A record number of strikes took place in New Zealand last year, a trade union historian, Mr B. Roth, said at the week-end.
Speaking to a Workers’ Educational Association seminar on the causes and solutions of strikes, he said that there were 394 strikes last year, compared with 323 in 1970 and 89 in 1967. The number of workers involved had risen from 28.000 in 1967 to 116,000 in 1973, and the number of working days lost because of industrial action had climbed from 139,000 to 271,000. But the New Zealand strike record was still far behind that of other similar countries. He said that more time was lost through accidents than through strikes.
He said the trade union movement in New Zealand was now more united and more militant in the pursuit of its objectives than before. Militancy was becoming normal in the trade union movement.
