Massey offers new language diploma
A new post-graduate diploma in secondlanguage teaching will be offered by Massey University this year.
• The diploma is designed to [provide instruction in the ‘modern principles and methods of language teaching for teachers of foreign languages such as Japanese and Russian, or second languages such as Maori for pakeha New Zealanders and English for Islanders. Dr N. Watts and Mr R. E. Panny will prepare students for the diploma. Many changes have taken place in language teaching over the last 20 years. The old “grammar-translation” aproach has given way to one which places emphasis on] language for communication j and on the spoken word.
The course will not only provide a working knowledge of current overseas approaches to foreign and second-language teaching but will also attempt to solve some of the problems of
language teaching in New Zealand. The diploma consists of five papers and a report on some aspect of language teaching. The papers are general linguistics, the secondlanguage learning process, the methodology of secondlanguage teaching, applied methodology, and an approved paper in education.
