CAR IN RIVER

A station waggon bounced 'off a pole and careered through a group of children into the Heathcote River near Eastern Terrace, Beckenham, about 7.30 p.m. yesterday. The station waggon failed to take a bend, mounted the footpath and rebounded off the pole on to the other side of the road. A group of children on the footpath dropped their bi, cycles and scattered as the car sped toward them, drove over the rear wheel of one bicycle and plunged into the river. A family of four inside the station waggon was helped out and taken to Christchurch Hospital. Denis Philip Paterson, aged 26, of 432 Wilsons Road, was the only one admitted. Mr Paterson, who suffered .head, arm and leg injuries, (was in a fairly satisfactory [condition last evening.
