Western Samoa is very much a land with one foot in the past and one in the future. This is shown up dramatically tn a documentary about the way of life in Western Samoa, which became the first independent island nation in the South Pacific in 1962 The film includes celebrations of Western Samoa's tenth anniversary of independence, which, by ns western razz-a-ma-tazz, epitomises the contradictions of modern Samoa. The prologue to "Samoa I Sisifo" is spoken bv Albert Wendt, a Samoan poet who has recently won recognition, : and the narration is by Hans : Kruse.
