Out batsmen reinstated
f\ 'l PA.-Reuter—Copyright) PORT OF SPAIN. Cricket officials bent the ruies of the game and reinstated Alvin Kallicharran, the West Indies batsman run out at the close of play on the second day of the test against England. Kallicharran, who had made 142, was run out at the non-striker’s end after 1.. Underwood bowled England’s last ball of the day. Angry spectators swarmed around the pavilion and hooed when the umpire, Mr D. Sang Hue gave the West Indian left-hander out. Then the two captains, the two managers, and the West Indies board of control members, Messrs J. Solomon and J. Stollmeyer, met at the ground to discuss the incident. More than two hours later Mr Stollmeyer emerged and said that while the umpire was right, Kallicharran would be allowed to continue his innings. Earlier the England captain, M. H. Denness was told that there was no question of the decision being revoked. Mr Stollmeyer said in a statement: “Under the laws of cricket the batsman, Kallicharran, was out—run out—and the umpire had no option but to give the decision which he made. •CORRECT DECISION’ “The West Indies captain has expressed complete satisfaction that the decision was correct, and the only one to be given under the circumstances. “Whilst appreciating that this is not strictly within the laws of cricket, the England manager and captain have, in the interests
of cricket as a whole—and the future of this tour in particular—requested that the appeal be withdrawn. "The umpires, bearing in mind the particular circumstances, have agreed to accept this request, and Kallicharran will therefore continue his innings. “The England player concerned, Tony Greig, in no way intended his instinctive action to be contrary to the spirit of the game, and he is truly sorry that this has caused an unhappy situation.” Underwood had bowled
the last ball of the day. The striker, B. Julien, stroked the ball gently towards Greig, fielding close to the bat on the off-side, and Greig, noticing that Kallicharran was out of his ground at the other end, threw' the wicket down. As a conciliatory gesture, Denness asked the umpires if “over” had been called, in which case the ball would have been dead. But he was told there was no question of the decision being revoked.
