N.Z. hockey side has 4-1 victory
New Zealand’s chances in the forthcoming international men’s hockey tournament in Christchurch soared at Memorial Park in Masterton last night, when New Zealand beat Poland, 4-1, the Press Association reported.
It was a vastly improved performance by New Zealand after its; match against Canada on the same ground on Saturday. All the goals came in the! :second half, although New] :Zealand was unlucky not to; ■score in the first half. That it! [did not do so was largely duel to heroic efforts by the] .Polish goal-keeper, S. Wgd-I nerski. Another Pole who will I j entertain New Zealand : crowds was S. Otulakowski, i 'who hit the ball with great’ power. A back, he scored his! side’s goal. New Zealand had A. Mc-j Intyre at centre-forward, and; the front line was given fur-1 ther punch by D. Appleby,; who came on" in the second half. The New Zealand goalscorers were R. Patel (2), G. Dayman, and Appleby.
Games in Teheran in August,?' Mr Chaudri said. Pakistan won the hockey; ;title at the first Games in 1970, but will have to defend it against India, Malaysia, and Japan—all strong teams. The team had to rebuild ■ after an incident at the j Munich Olympics which re- ; suited in 11 players being banned for life, Mr Chaudri 'said. ; Since Munich the team has i 'played in the World Cup, in' I Amsterdam last August, and: :finished fourth behind the : Netherlands, India, and West ; Germany. The team made a tour of; 'Australia before coming to; 'New Zealand, and played four test matches. It drew; the first, 2-all, won the next;
two, 3-2 and 4-2, and lost the last, 0-2. Mr Chaudri said his team was very disappointed that India was unable to attend the Christchurch tournament. “We would like to have played them here before meeting them in Teheran. “ft is very difficult to predict. results, but we want• to win the tournament here.; It will not be easy, because I all the teams are of equal' strength. “We like hard and fast; grounds to play on, which! suit our stickwork and short-! passing game,” Mr Chaudri said. It is .the first time since 1958 that a Pakistan team has visited New Zealand, and the last New Zealand team was in Pakistan in 1955.
