The Queen’s rug

Few probably noticed the small foot rug beneath the Queen’s feet as she sat at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on ! Saturday, but to one small boy it meant a great deal. The woollen rug, each loop of pile individually knotted, was 18in square and incorporated the Games symbol on a background of red, white and blue. It was made by 10-year-old Michael Duns, of Gayhurst Road, Dallington, but it was not until the last minute that the thought occurred to offer it for the Queen’s use at the ceremony. Late last week Michael’s father, who was working as a teleprinter operator at the Games Post Office at Queen Elizabeth 11 Park, i mentioned the rug to the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (Mr R. S. Scott), I and it was decided that the , rug would be made available for the Queen.
