More than 4470 new pupils j Will attend State secondary schools in Christchurch today. and more than 1500 pupils will begin their primary schooling in the Canterbury Education Board district. The 14 State secondary schools in Christchurch will provide education for 15,303 pupils this year compared with 13.500 in 1969. when there were 3660 new en-i trants. The superintendent of education for the Southern Region (Mr H. M. McMillan) said yesterday that there would be a decline in secondary school rolls until 1984. This reflected a national! trend. Mr D. Wilson, the general; manager of the Canterbury! Education Board, said that! primary school rolls were! now' stable, with an expected decline in the next few years.! Three new' intermediate schools will open in the Education Board district today— In Timaru, Ashburton, and Greymouth. No new primary or secondary schools are expected to open until 1975.
