Show Gate should win big Trentham mile

(from Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. fhe matchless courage and great class of Show Gate will assure her of the respect of everyone in the George Adams Handicap at Trentham tomorrow.

But top weight of 57.5 kg in one of the glamour races of the year will set Mr G. B. Thomson’s bonny Gate Keeper mare her sternest test so far.

One of the mote obvious threats to Show Gate is the sprightly Wood-ville-trained veteran, ; Sharif, a strongly finishing second to the Otago mare in the shorter Telegraph Handicap last Saturday. Sharif came too late to) put any pressure on Show Gate in the sprint on Cup day. but the finish might;, have taken on a different ! character had his apprentice rider managed to find a clear run through the pack a little earlier. Sharif will again carry his Telegraph Handicap weight of 56.5 tomorrow, and will meet Show Gate It kg. better. That’s Luck, a respectable third at longish odds in the Telegraph Handicap, will again oppose Show Gate and Sharif, but with no really bright prospects of edging, them out over the longer distance. Most of the form students will be looking for a younger and less heavily weighted contender to supply stiffest opposition to Show Gate and Sharif this time. lECHYD GAME Th* three-year-old. leehyd. has been embarked on something of an upside-down programme in coming back to 1600 metres after running in the Wellington Derby last Monday. But leehyd did just that most rewardingly at the Auckland Cup < ar nival, where he won the King's Plate (1600 metres) on Auckland Cup day after running an unlucky fifth in the New Zealand Derby. leehyd is all gameness and seems incapable of running a, bad race He lost second only; in the last few strides of the I Wellington Derbv. and if he approaches the Adams Handicap! with the same zest lie should be one of I he top contenders. Sir Gallivant has been bogged down on a string of minor playings from < M Jillings's stable In I he last few w eeks. One such placing, and an unlucky one. was his second to Ngaere Dawn in the Anniversary Handicap on Wellington Cup day. It was late in the race before R F Andrews could find racing room down on the inside for Sn Gallivant. The fonr-y ear-old responded generously with a burst of finishing -peed, hut missed out by halt a length. NORDIC STAR Nordic Star showed little in th* bands ol an apprentice ii the Telegraph Handicap last week but while finishing onlx seventh she was making steads headway in the last 200 metres The case with which she beat some top milers earlier in her career, hoth at Ellerslie and Trentham. should not be for gotten this time. last autumn, she won the Auckland liaeing Club's Eastci Handu ap by 12 lengths. Anothei -un of that quality would put a liras s strain on all the others. Kaukapakapa, owned in the by Mr G D. I'atneron. but trained at Awapuni hs W G. Ivil. won this race a sear ago He looked close to Ins best again when sixth against the sprinters on Monday. Kaukapakapa sweated up freely before the race, and became unsettled in his stall after the •tart was delayed by horses breaking through their gate. If there is to be a surprise from lower in the handicap, the three s car-old. Sentry Hill, might be the one tn effect it He failed in the Wellington Stakes but that race might have ton nd him one short PEG'S PRIDE The Wellington Racing Club Handicap, first leg of the double, offers Peg’s Pride a bright chance ot improving hei good record on the course, She contested the Wellington t up on a short preparation and pulled herself ragged. Quite out of character, she ssas in the tir-t three in the earls stages, and ft said much for tier courage and stamina that she finished sixth after running so keenls for so far.
