Govt stand criticised

The Government’s refusal to give paid leave to public servants to assist as officials at the Commonwealth Games has been strongly criticised by the vice-chairman of the Canterbury Public Service Association (Mr H. Davey). Mr Davey, who is on leave for the Games himself, said the Government was being “utterly hypocritical” in giving paid leave to athletes but not to officials. “Without these officials there simply would not be any Games,” said Mr Davey. “The Government is taking for granted the patriotism of these employees who are concerned to ensure that the Games are a complete success and reflect well on New Zealand and New Zealanders.”
