Cleaning footpaths

Sir, —Is it possible for the filthy stained footpaths in the inner-city to be cleaned and washed down thoroughly immediately and kept clean? The stains appear to be caused mainly by thoughtless and careless window and shop entrancecleaners. Just throwing a bucket of water over path is useless and a waste of time. I realise that ice-cream and snack-bar foods contribute to the filth. Note Colombo Street from Hereford to Cashel Streets as example. Congratulations to Hallensteins for their regular washing of footpaths around the store. Create an incentive

and encouragement for the people to keep their beautiful city clean and fresh looking by tidy footpaths. No excuses wanted.—Yours etc. W.SCOTT January 15,1974.
