The Court Theatre and Equity

Sir, —May I correct an erroneous statement attributed to me in your newspaper of January 10. It appears that I may have misled the reporter who interviewed me. Regarding Equity’s dealing with the Court Theatre I am quoted as saying “Equity need only ask for a rise, and it is granted.” This is just not so. We have negotiated with the Christchurch Theatre Trust, to our mutual satisfaction, with regard to a basic minimum fee, but the decision to increase actors’ fees was made solely by the Trust Board, mainly because of the support given by the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council and by the public. This we have appreciated, realising the trust cannot at this time pay award rates. An exemption is in fact in operation. As support for professional entertainment increases, so must standards of the artist improve. Equity asks only for this.—Yours etc MILDRED WOODS January 11, 1974.
