Loud music

Sir, —Several friends, whose opinion I respect as coming from broadminded and tolerant people, have forcibly expressed their dislike of the continuous blare of amplified music and singing encountered at some local night spots, so loud that they could not hear each other speak. No doubt other people have shared my experience when on two ot three occasions my friends and I decided to leave because the noise was getting us down. I feel sure there are still plenty of people who enjoy and evening of wining, dining and conversation with a variety of music and other entertainment as a pleasant but more subdued background. New Zealand has plenty of fine musicians; but the big beat and amplifiers allow undistinguished music sung by very ordinary voices to go over by blocking out everything else. A trial of no music or much quieter music from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. could prove interesting.—Yours etc.,
