Helicopter recovered

A United States Navy twin turbine helicopter which was damaged in a storm at Cape Crozier last November was towed back to McMurdo Station on Saturday on a 20-ton sledge pulled by a D 8 tractor.

The machine will be placed: aboard the supply ship, Pri-| vate John R. Towle, early! next month and taken to Davisville, Rhode Island, for repairs.

Before it was decided to attempt a recovery an extensive air and surface survey was carried out of the area where the helicopter lay on its side at Cape Crozier and of the possible routes back to McMurdo Station, 50 miles away.

The tractor hauling the 20ton sledge, the recovery team of five, and a vehicle from Scott Base, left McMurdo Station at 2.30 p.m. last Wednesday. It reached Cape Crozier at midnight Using techniques employed in Vietnam the helicopter was righted and placed aboard the sledge. The party left the area at 1.30 p.m. on Friday and arrived back at McMurdo Station at noon on Saturday.
