‘ONE SAY’ ON BILL

No Maoris needed (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. Maori representation on the Parliamentary select committee hearing submissions on the Children and Young Persons Bill was not needed, the committee’s chairman (Dr G. A. Wall) said tonight. Dr Wall was commenting on recent criticisms from Nga Tamatoa and the Auckland Committee on Racism and Discrimination, who said Maori representation was essential because of the' numbers of Maori children; who would be affected by the I bill.

“This is a bill dealing with all the ethnic groups in our community, and as the father jof five Maoris, I feel that the jproblems of ethnic groups (other than Europeans are adequately represented,” Dr Wall said.

“This bill deals with all ethnic groups, not just Maoris and Europeans. The important thing is that it deals with children and young people, not Polynesian or European children, or those of any other ethnic group.

“I think the problems of young people as a whole are much greater than the problems which separate the various ethnic groups.”
