Rugby on ice

An American Rugby team came close to beating its New Zealand opponents at their national game in a match played on the ice shelf about a mile out in front of Scott Base on Saturday.

The Americans held a 4nil lead until almost the end of the game when a try was scored by one of the representatives from Scott Base, which equalised the score.

The Scott Base leader (Mr H. W. E. Jones) outlined the rules to the Americans and acted as referee. The only casualty which required medical attention was the American who scored for his side.

The men played in Antarctic clothing and “bunny” boots. After the game the two teams sat down to dinner at Scott Base — and the New Zealanders were challenged to a game of gridiron.
