Cyclists’ accidents

Sir, —“Some consideration has been given to possible cycle routes . . .” Oh yes? Consider our local case. A footbridge at the end of Smartlea Street has been given extra barriers to deter motor-cyclists; but a barrier that stops a motor-cycle will also stop a pedal-cycle. Now many people like me go by the side-streets to shop in Addington, and though I could lift my unloaded cycle over the stile, when the panniers are loaded down with groceries it is quite another matter. So now we must go up Hoon Hay Road to Lincoln Road, which is at all times a busy T-junction. And having turned right, we must then stay in the middle of the road for 200 m or so, because of the laned approach to Annex Road. Did they really consider that when they barred that bridge?— Yours, etc., E. D. GREGSON. June 16, 1973.
