Sir George Harriman, the president of British Leyland until March of this year, when he retired, has died in Britain at the age of 65. Sir George Harriman was one of the leading figures in the British motor indus-

try. He joined Morris as an apprentice in 1923, and became the company’s assistant works superintendent in 1938. He joined Austin in 1940, and became production manager two years later. In 1945, he was elected to the Austin board, and in 1952 he became deputy chairman. After the formation of the British Motor Corporation in 1952, Sir George Harriman was appointed deputy managing director of the new industrial giant. In 1961. he became chairman and managing director. He was knighted in 1965, and in 1966 became chairman of British Motor Holdings. After the merger between B.M.H. and Leyland. he became president of the new group.
