Canterbury player loses bowls final

'Xcir Zealand Press Association) WANG AN I 1. Consistent bowling took G. Dunlop I lauranga) to a convincing, 17-9, victory over D. Stewart (Canterbury 1 in an interesting but one-sided singles final in the New Zealand indoor bowling championships yesterday.

After a slow start — down 0-4 after four ends — Dunlop found an excellent length and thrilled the 10(10 spectators with some tine drawing shots. Stewart, a beaten semifinalist in the singles in 1964, scored only one point over a period of eight ends as Dunlop strode away to a match-winning, 11-5, lead. Stewart started with a two and two singles on the first three ends, but Dunlop replied with a single, a three, and another single, to lead. ‘6-4, after six ends. COMMANDING LEAD ■ Stewart replied with a I single on the seventh, but a ■three and a single to Dunlop , put him into a commanding Head, of 10-5, after nine ends. Still scoring slowly,; ; Stewart could only get a single on the tenth. Dunlop matched this at the next,; and Stewart made his last; gesture with a two at the! twelfth. But that was almost the lend of his resistance. Three twos to Dunlop on successive ends put paid to the Canterbury player’s chances and Stewart’s single on the last was only of academic ; interest. The same sort of consistent] bowling carried Dunlop to a 12-6 l

victory over the successful " Aucklander, B. Pridham, in the ;; semi-finals. Stewart had a much tougher road to the final, beat- " ing a determined A. Buckley I ; (Bush Ruahine), 8-5. WELL TO FORE A total of 764 players qualified ! from the 2245 entered for the singles. Canterbury being well to the fore with 23 of the 51 entrants going through to post--section play. The youngest qualifier was the s il2-vear-old. Bernard Melville of Hawke’s Bay. formerly ol Can--s'terbury. He won three of Jus >:games in section play, but after winning two games in the postsection, went down to W. George ) (Waikato), 10-13. t Last year’s winner, J. Boothby [ (Taranaki), was beaten on the ' .last end of his game in the .[seventh round with J. Jamieson ! (Hawke’s Bay). Boothby was ’lfour-up on the card, and instead I of drawing to cut down .Jamieson's chances of scoring lour, drove twice and missed. I Results were (from fifth, [nreth round.—B. Murray (Tara-|
