N.Z. award to Elmwood

J The Elmwood players, of Christchurch have won the Benson land Hedges full-length play festival with their production of “Under Milk Wood,” by Dylan Thomas. In addition to the $2OO first; [prize, the Elmwood Players! won the trophy for the best! [over-all production. “Under Milk Wood” was; produced by John Milligan! and Leslie Collingwood. The group also won a merit award of $25 for “The Changing Room,” by David Storey, produced by Hunter Bell. About 25 amateur societies took part in the festival. They were judged during March, April and May by Mr D. Smiles of Wanganui. Mr Smiles said that the Elmwood Players production of “Under Milk Wood” made full use of talented young actors, who flowed freely into hundreds of character parts, and that the production, acting, set, and lighting created a forceful unity. The second prize was won [by the Hamilton Playbox Repertory Society with “What the Butler Saw,” by Joe Orton, and the third prize was won by the Manawatu Theatre Society, with “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,” by Paul Zindel. .
