Taylor's Mistake beaten

After taking the over-all club championship for the last five years, the Taylor's Mistake club lost it yesterday to South Brighton at the fourth and final Canterbury surf lifesaving championship carnival of the season at Taylor's Mistake. South Brighton, with 219 A points from championship events at the carnivals, was well clear of Taylor’s Mistake in second place and gained its reward for 1 having consistent performances in all three sections — men's junior and women’s.

The senior club championship was extremely close, with Taylor’s Mistake (66) winning by a point from South Brighton and Waimairi, which were second equal. South Brighton gained its dominance in the women’s section, which it won comfortably. Taylor’s Mistake did not feature in the first three placings. The feature event of the day, the senior surf race, was won by G. Walker (Waimairi). He went to an { early lead and was untroubled to beat A. B. Kindred (New Brighton). Kindred swam most of the race close to S. Johnston (Waimairi), who was third, and just held Johnston off in a sprint up the beach. In the junior surf race final, J. Symon (New Brighton) also had a good win. He beat M. Trembath (South Brighton), with E. Box (Waimairi) third.

Unlike the preceding carnivals, which had been troubled by i strong drifts or dumping surf,, there was an even surf yesterday, I making conditions much easier. The feature event in the women’s section was also the final of Che surf race. Miss P. Horne i (South Brighton) easily won this j from Miss S. Anderson (Taylor’s Mistake). Miss Horne must now be a strong prospect for the women’s title at the national championships at New Plymouth in two weeks.

Taylor’s Mistake continued its dominance of the rescue and resuscitation events, winning both the six-man and four-man events yesterday. The national titleholder. Waimain. with two good wins yesterday, had little trouble in re» itatning its senior surf canoe title, ! while South Brighton showed its ; continued strength by retaining the surf boat title.
