Canterbury wins rep. tennis

The Canterbury representative tennis team won its fourth fixture of the season when it beat North Otago by 13 matches to 3 at Wilding Park yesterday.

Earlier this season Canterbury had beaten South Canterbury, Hutt Valley and West Coast. Yesterday doubles were played first and Canterbury lost one women’s doubles, won the other and won both men’s matches. All four men won their singles, but North Otago won one women’s singles. At this stage Canterbury had an unbeatable 10-2 lead. It lost one mixed doubles.

Playing top for Canterbury, the young S. Burns, of North Linwood, attacked strongly with ground stroke and volley to beat M. Elliott, 6-2, 7-6.

Mrs K. Graham, who has also represented Otago, won the top women’s singles for Canterbury 1 when she placed with accuracy and length against Mrs B. MciCone.

The North Otago team was weakened by the unavailability of a number of leading players.

In junior events, the Canterbun- under 17 team was beaten by South Canterbury, 9-7, and the under 15 side beat South Canterbury, 10-6,

Mixed doubles. —Otjley and Mrs Graham lost to Elliott and Mrs I McCone, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6; Burns and ! Miss Chapman beat Knight and Mrs Knight, 6-7, 6-1. 6-4; Ralfe and Miss Howman beat Jones and Miss Willetts, 6-2. 6-0: Roberts and Miss McQueen beat McCone and Mrs Pringle, 3-6. 6-1. 6-1.

Canterburv won by 13 matches to 3.
