Taranaki in command
(N.Z. Press Association * NEW PLYMOUTH. The Hawke Cup remained comfortably in Taranaki’s grip after the second day of the. defence match against Waikato at New Plymouth. The challenger, Waikato, batting in its second innings, had an over-all lead of only 46 runs with two wickets standing and Taranaki seems assured of outright victory in its twelfth defence match. Waikato scored 101 and 174 for eight wickets, and Taranaki scored 229. Taranaki’s fast bowler, A. B. Jordan, was the chief destroyer. None of the Waikato batsmen were happy against him, and he took five first innings wickets to take his Hawke Cup tally to 49 in seven matches.
The off-spinner, T. O’Byrne took five Waikato second innings wickets, as seven wickets fell for 54 in the last two-hour session. Scores: Waikato 101 (A. B. Jordan 5/49, D. Yardley 3/16) and 174/8 (C. Webb 50. G. Murphy 48; T. O’Byrne 5/49, Yardley 2/33), Taranaki 229 (D. Green 62; J. Smith 3/30, A. Puna 3/50).
