Prosecutions over tax
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 18. Large numbers of people face fines of up to $2OO within the next few weeks for failing to furnish 1972 income tax returns. The Wellington regional controller for the Inland Revenue Department (Mr S. Pascoe) said today' that 4500 provisional taxpayers, including investors, businessmen and farmers had so far failed to send in returns.
“We don’t want a repeat of last year, when there were three special Magistrate’s Court sittings to deal with people failing to furnish returns,” said Mr Pascoe. “The department wants returns, not prosecutions.” Company tax returns made out by chartered accountants had until the end of January, and in some cases longer, to send in returns, he said.
