Outbreak of tuberculosis
CN.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Dec. 6. • Two cases of tuberculosis at Middlemarch have been confirmed by the Department of Health, and they and three other suspected cases from the community have been adimtted to hospital in Dunedin. A routine investigation of contacts was being made in the area by the Health Department, said the Medical Officer of Health in Dunedin (Dr R. C. Begg). Three nurses and a health officer began tracing and testing contacts on Monday. A mobile X-ray unit worked for most of the day and reaction-tests on school children began on Monday. It is hoped to test all 800 people in the community. The outbreak was not of an exceptional size, said the district executive officer of the Department of Health (Mr R. E. Comey), but no-one should, be complacent about tuberculosis, even with modern methods of treatment; it could occur anywhere at anytime.
