Ship turns back

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 6. The 5393-ton freighter Wenchow, berthed at Auckland for three weeks with engine trouble, set sail today —and got as far as Rangitoto Island before having to turn back. The ship left Kings Wharf at 237 p.m. and was back at the same wharf just before 4 p.m. Representatives of the ship’s agent, the P. and O. Line, could not be reached tonight, and officers aboard the ship refused to comment on the return. However, it is believed that the ship did not turn back because of a recurrence of the engine trouble which stranded her off New Caledonia on October 22. Unconfirmed reports said a failure in the ship’s air conditioning plant was the cause of the turn-around. 'T'Kca chin roHimo/l T-irn-T

The ship returned to port under her own power. The Wenchow was towed to Auckland by a Brisbane tug after her last breakdown, and repairs were completedearlier this week.
