Gerrard appointed to swimming team

A former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, D. Gerrard, has been appointed man-ager-coach of the New Zealand team for the Australian open swimming championships at Adelaide in February. The appointment was made by the council of the Amateur Swimming Association last evening. Six nominations were received for the position, all professional or amateur coaches. The others were Messrs D. W. Caln (Canterbury), A. J. Cotterill (Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay), M. A. Stanton (Manawatu), C. G. Way (Waic - Williams (AuckGerrard has been a keen worker in swimming since his retirement from competition, particularly In the Otago centre where he is now resident. Mr S. Williams, discussing the candidates, said the association was particularly lucky to have a young person of the calibre of Gerrard. “He is an excellent worker

and supporter of swimming, and his attitude is considerably better than one nominee . . .” Mr Williams was Interrupted by the chairman (Mr M. R. Duckmanton), who said he would not accept discussion against candidates Mr Williams: Does thia mean you will accept discussion only In favour of candidates. Mr Duckmanton: Yes. Before the ballot was taken, Mr Williams said he wished to express his objection to the chairman’s ruling. EVENT SPONSORED Mr Dukmanton reported that the Walrarapa centre had obtained sponsorship of Sl9OO from Hansell’s, Ltd, for the national age-group championships at Masterton in February. The company had also offered the option of sponsoring future agogroup championships to the extent of Mr Duckmanton also reported that the age-group organising committee had obtained a sponsor for every event on the championship programme.
