N.Z. told of Aust. steps on China

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, December 5. Australia has already informed New Zealand of early steps by the new Labour Government to recognise China, authoritative sources said in Canberra tonight.

The Prime Minister (Mr Gough Whitlam) told a press

conference today that he had I seiit a message to Australia’s High Commissioner in New Zealand (Dame Annabelle Rankin).

The sources said afterwards that the message was to inform the New Zealand Government of Australia’s approach through Paris to China.

Mr Whitlam said that he had sent his personal regards to Dame Annabelle Rankin who was a political appointment under the previous Government., Mr Whitlam said that he had no reason to believe that Dame Annabelle, or Australia’s Ambassador to Japan, Mr Gordon Freeth, another Liberal political appointment, would not carry out the policies of the new Government with complete competence and loyalty.
