Stand on nuclear testing

A Christchurch move opposing any future nuclear testing in the Pacific was adopted at the national convention of the Christian Family Movement in Auckland at the week-end.

The movement comprises Christians from all churches; the convention was attended by 450 people from Northland to Southland. It commended the provisions against nuclear testing contained in the manifesto of the Labour Party, although did not mention specifically the party by name. A resolution, introduced by Mr J. Drury, of Christchurch, read that the convention, “concerned as it is with the welfare of families everywhere, notes with pleasure the unqualified policy statement contained in the manifesto of one of the major political parties wherein it sets out specifically the steps it would take in opposition to any future nuclear testing, particularly in the Pacific.” The convention supported “any definite and lawful action taken by any group to oppose and prevent further nuclear testing.” It also resolved to “call on the International Confederation of Christian Family Movements to support the

New Zealand movement and urges the Christian Family Movement in New Zealand to keep this issue in the forefront of its concerns.”
