“Dear”

Sir, —Congratulations to the writer of the letter on this subject. One does not expect to be addressed as “madam,” as this would suggest expecting to be treated as a superior person. But nor does one wish to be addressed in the terms one might use to a small child. That dreadful “Dear” so horribly patronising. Why is its use so widespread?—Yours, etc., F.D. November 6, 1972.
