WOOL AT GOOD LEVELS
Although values were not at the very high levels of a month ago, growers had a good day yesterday at the third Christchurch wool sale of the season. A pleasing point was the upturn in crossbred
values. These wools were 2| to 10 per cent dearer than at Auckland at the beginning of the week. Even so, the finer crossbreds showed the most marked recovery and finned during the day. But compared with the last fine-wool sale, at Timaru in mid-October, the finer wools were from 12j per cent to 20 per cent cheaper. While fleece-wools generally were from 35c to 45c per kilogram below rates at the Christchurch sale early last month, they were still from 50c to 55c better than in August for fine wools and 20c to 35c for crossbreds, and compared with a year ago were from 90c to 110 c higher for fine wools and 60c to 90c up for coarser types.
The finer fleece wool sold mainly from about I4Bc to 180 c and coarser fleece from 120 c to 160 c. The average for the day might be about 130 c, which would be 128 per cent higher than last November but about 22 per cent behind last month.
There was optimism in the sale-room that prices may have levelled off again and there are said to be indications of a continuing strong outlook for wool. (DETAILS, PAGE 22)
