At present, main research activities are in the broad [areas of heavy-ion interactions, [direct inter-actions and nuclear Ispectroscopy. The principal accelerator is an EN(6MV) Tandem which is pro'vided with a negative ion injector cyclotron (26 MeV protons and 13 MeV deuterons) and a polarized ion source, in addition to the regular gas and lithium exchange source. A 14UD tandem accelerator (14MV terminal) will be installed in December, 1972, and should be operational by mid 1973 The salary range for a Research Fellow is 56804-59324 per annum (5 x 504) and for a Senior Research Fellow $10,026-811.964 per annum (6 x 323), Australian currency. Initial level of appointment and salary depends on qualifications and experience. Appointment is for three years in the first instance with a possible extension to a maximum of five years. THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY CENTRE FOR RESOURCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES DIRECTOR THE University proposes to establish a Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies and invites inquiries from persons interested m appointment as its Director. It is hoped that the Director can take up duty in 1973 so that he can play a full part in the detailed discussions on its development. The Centre is designed to advance research in environmental and resource studies, to provide postgraduate training and to seek solutions to the problems of natural resource management. When fully developed, the Centre is expected to have approximately twenty-five academic staff (of whom about one-third will have tenure) drawn from the natural and social sciences including ecology, economics, engineering, systems analysis. The Director will lead and coordinate interdisciplinary research studies within the Centre and the University and. with the assistance of an Advisory Committee, develop collaboration with other research institutions. His professional background may be in any field appropriate to the Centre, but he will have a broad interest in and understanding of resource and environmental studies. The Director will also hold a Chair in the University. His term of office as Director will be a matter for agreement with the University, but his appointment as professor will be until retiring age. normally sixty-five years.
